4 Adults, 14 days with R30 000 budget

Epic Safari Adventure: From the Western Cape to Kruger National Park

Day 1 & 2: The Journey Begins

Our long-anticipated safari adventure kicked off bright and early in the Western Cape! With four adults packed into our trusty Renault Kwid, we hit the road towards the legendary Kruger National Park. The excitement buzzed in the car as we navigated the picturesque Route 62, surrounded by stunning mountain views and lush vineyards.

After a day of driving, we spent the night with family in Johannesburg. The warmth of familiar faces made for a perfect pit stop before diving into the wild.

Cost Breakdown: We kept our budget in check with fuel, snacks, and a few strategically placed pit stops. Our goal? Stick to a R30,000 budget for the entire 14-day trip!

Day 3: Arrival at Kruger – Pretoruiskop Camp

Finally, the moment arrived! We rolled into Pretoruiskop Camp, nestled in the heart of the park. This would be our base for exploration. Arriving late meant we skipped the sunset drive, but after settling into our cozy huts, we fired up the braai for our first meal in the wild.

That night, we were serenaded by the chorus of crickets and distant animal sounds—a symphony that would accompany us throughout our stay.

Day 4: Afsaal Picnic Spot and First Wildlife Sightings

Our first full day in Kruger began with rusks and coffee at Pretoruiskop before heading to the Afsaal Picnic Spot for brunch. We prepared our meal using a skottelbraai rented from the camp shop, which included gas and cleaning afterward—an affordable and fun option!

As we savored our brunch, we had our first real wildlife sightings! A group of hyenas (my favorite animal) trotted by, and I couldn’t contain my excitement. Their playful energy made our day!

Day 5: Skukuza Golf Club and the Big 5

We woke up to leftover braai for breakfast, enjoying it by one of the dams on our way to Skukuza Golf Club for lunch. What a unique experience! We indulged in delicious burgers while keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Post-lunch, we visited the Skukuza shop to stock up on supplies and souvenirs. It was great to have convenient options while sticking to our budget. Along the way, we spotted elephants, giraffes, and various antelope species.

Day 6: Tamboti Tented Camp – In the Heart of Nature

Leaving Pretoruiskop, we made our way to Tamboti Tented Camp. The anticipation built up as we drove through the park, and the moment we arrived, we felt a wave of serenity. The tents were cozy and perfectly situated for wildlife viewing.

After settling in, we embarked on a sunset game drive and were fortunate enough to spot a beautiful cheetah stealthily stalking through the tall grass. It was an unforgettable experience! That evening, we gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter under the stars.

Day 7: Mopani Camp and More Big 5

The next morning, we headed to Mopani Camp. En route, we encountered the infamous Big 5: elephants trumpeting, lions lounging, buffalo grazing, leopards hidden in trees, and a white rhino crossing the road. Each sighting added to our sense of wonder.

At Mopani, we explored nearby trails and relaxed at the camp’s lookout point, where we spotted more wildlife around the waterhole. We treated ourselves to a sunset dinner at the restaurant, overlooking the dam. Wow! The views were breathtaking, and we didn’t want the night to end.

Day 8: A Day at Shishuweni Camp

Because our next camp was nearby and we could only check in later, we took our time at Mopani with rusks and coffee, then enjoyed brunch at another picnic spot. Afterward, we set off for Shishuweni Camp, where the wildlife was abundant.

At Shishuweni, we spent the afternoon at the bird hide in camp. To our delight, we witnessed hippos mating right in front of the camp’s waterhole! Our evening was filled with more campfire stories and another delicious braai—perfect for bonding after a day of adventure.

Day 9: Marloth Park – A Different Perspective

After six incredible nights in Kruger, we headed to Marloth Park. This private reserve provided a unique experience; we could see wildlife roaming freely right outside our accommodation! We were greeted by curious zebras and playful kudu grazing just beyond our door.

We explored Marloth Park on foot, soaking in the lush environment and enjoying the leisurely pace. Our days were spent relaxing, driving through the park, and keeping an eye out for wildlife. We capped off our holiday with a sundowner at the Crocodile River, overlooking the Kruger National Park—an idyllic way to reflect on our adventure.

Budgeting Tips and Reflections

Our entire adventure came to R30,000 for 14 days, covering fuel, accommodation, food, and park fees. Here are a few tips for budget-savvy travelers:

  1. Plan Meals: Self-catering saves money. We braaied most nights and enjoyed picnic brunches at the park’s picnic spots.
  2. Shop Smart: Stock up on essentials outside the park to avoid high prices in tourist areas.
  3. Share Costs: Traveling with friends allowed us to split costs, making it more affordable for everyone.

Final Thoughts

This self-drive safari was a dream come true! From the stunning landscapes of the Western Cape to the wild beauty of Kruger, every moment was an adventure. We were fortunate enough to see all the Big 5, cheetahs, and painted dogs—all while sticking to our budget.

If you’re considering a self-drive safari, go for it! With careful planning, a spirit of adventure, and the right company, it’s an experience you’ll cherish forever. Until next time, Africa! 🦁🌿🚗
